Here are some pics of my 1956 Powell Sport Wagon Station Wagon. The Powell Brothers of Compton, CA produced scooters in the 30's and 40's and made quite a name for themselves in that arena. In the 50's they wanted to produce a lower cost pickup truck for sportsmen and tradesmen. Less than 1000 pickups were produced between 1955 - 1957 with a camper top
and one or two fishing rod holders being some of the only options. Around 70 are known to exist according to the Powell Registry. They also produced less than 100 station wagons in which dual fishing rod holders and a single bait box were standard fare. Only five wagons are known to exist with three of them in poor/incomplete condition. The Powell Brothers gathered all the pre-war Plymouth cars they could find and stripped them down to the bare chassis and rebuilt the engine/transmission/rear-end and dropped on the steel body of their own design.
Rumor has it that they ran out of used Plymouth chassis in the area and production ceased. The brothers started building scooters again (off-road types this time) and gave up on their dreams of automakers. I recently found a porcelain Powell Sport Wagon dealership sign and have it hanging next to the Powell in my garage. The editor of the Powell registry never knew that a sign existed but stated sales brochures occasionally turn up at swap meets. I am still looking for one of those!

If anyone has any information on Powells I would love to hear from them. Also, I have two magazine road tests from the 1950's and two articles on the vehicles from the 80's and 90's that I would make copies from if anyone is captivated as I am about the car/truck and it's unique history.
